NCIRS conducts varied research and surveillance activities in a numerous areas including
- Disease Surveillance and epidemiology
- Serosurveillance
- Analysis and reporting on the Australian Childhood Immunisation Registrar (ACIR)
- Analysis and reporting of AEFI and providing clinical support for the provision of vaccines to children with adverse events following immunisation
- Disease modelling
- Evaluation of immunisation programs
- Technical support for ATAGI and DoHA
- Provision of updates for the 9th Edition of The Australian Immunisation Handbook
- Coordinate the development of the 10th Edition of the Australian Immunisation Handbook
- Indigenous research and surveillance for VPDs
- Social research
- Communication and educational activities
- Clinical trials in both children and adults
