Kidney researchers awarded for research excellence
Congratulations to Associate Professor Germaine Wong and Dr Geoff Zhang from the Centre of Kidney Research (CKR), who have received awards at the recent meeting of The Transplantation Society of Australia and New Zealand in Melbourne.
Associate Professor Wong received the prestigious Ian McKenzie Award for outstanding leadership in transplantation. As a transplant nephrologist at The Children’s Hospital at Westmead and a researcher in the CKR clinical team, she is particularly interested in improving health outcomes for young patients who have undergone a kidney transplant.
Her epidemiological research into this area uses big data to provide a comprehensive evidence base to guide preventative, management and treatment practices in order to reduce the burden of co-morbidities, such as renal cancer, after transplantation.
Dr Geoff Zhang, Senior Scientist within the CKR laboratory research team received the Basic Science Researcher Award. Dr Zhang’s laboratory research focuses on examining the mechanisms of transplant rejection, and the role of T regulatory cells and the immune response in this process.
